In 1869 Russian chemist Dimitri Mendeleev started the development of the periodic table. He arranged the chemical elements by atomic mass and left other spaces open for new discoveries.

There are currently 118 elements in the periodic table, and more are being discovered. The periodic table is broken down into 10 categories: Alkali Metals, Alkaline Earth Metals, Transition Metals, Basic Metals, Semimetals (or Metalloids), Nonmetals, Halogens, Noble Gases, Lanthanides, and Actinides.
